Backyard Fix #1: Replacing the Old Patio Sconces
By Joe, Blue Collar Green Thumb
The back patio lights were toast. One was full of rainwater, the other looked like a bug motel. My wife gave me "the look," which means I was officially out of excuses. Time to get it done.
Step 1: Kill the Power
Don't be a hero. Flip the breaker — not just the light switch — and use a voltage tester if you’ve got one. Sparks and eyebrows don’t mix.
Step 2: Take Down the Old Fixtures
Unscrew the cover plate, disconnect the wires, and pry off the mounting bracket. If a wasp flies out, that’s just bonus excitement.
Step 3: Wire the New One
Black to black, white to white, ground to ground. Twist the wire nuts on tight. Tug each connection to make sure nothing’s loose. If you're not sure — stop and double-check.
Step 4: Flip the Breaker Back On
If the light turns on and doesn’t explode, congrats — you’ve done it right. If it doesn’t turn on, go back and check your wiring (or your breaker… or your patience).
Joe’s Tips:
Use weatherproof fixtures — this is outside, not a spa.
Seal the back with caulk or foam to keep bugs and water out.
Go with LED bulbs — less heat, less current draw, less hassle.
This took me 30 minutes.
